Spruce Tree Names and types of Picea Species

Norway Spruce, (Picea abies)

Spruce trees are all coniferous evergreen trees of the genus Picea. There are about 35 species of Spruce known in the northern temperate and boreal (taiga) regions of earth. Some species are used for Christmas Trees, such as Norway Spruce, (Picea abies).

Spruce trees can be distinguished from other evergreens by their draping branches and conical form. The needles (leaves) of spruce trees are attached singly to the branches in a spiral pattern, each needle is attached on a small peg like structure called a pulvinus. Spruce tree needles are shed when they are 4 to 10 years old, leaving the branches rough with the retained pulvinus (an easy means of distinguishing them from other similar genera, where the branches are fairly smooth). Spruce trees can become large trees from 20 to 60 meters (66 to 200 ft) tall when mature.
