The tree species grouped within the Genus Prunus; Subgenus Prunus, are distinguished from other species within the Prunus Genus by the tree shoots having a terminal bud, and solitary (not clustered) side buds. The flowers are arranged in groups of 1 to 5 on short stems. The fruit exhibits a groove running down one side of the flesh, and contains a smooth stone / pit, unlike other species within the Prunus Genus.
