The Pinus genus is classified into three subgenera based on leaf characters, cone and seed.

  1. Subgenus Pinus; Two fibrovascular bundles per leaf. Scale with a sealing band. Umbo dorsal. Seedwings articulate.
  2. Subgenus Strobus; One fibrovascular bundle per leaf. Scale without a sealing band. Umbo terminal. Seedwings adnate.
  3. Subgenus Ducampopinus; One fibrovascular bundle per leaf. Scale without a sealing band. Umbo dorsal. Seedwings articulate.
